Verulam House, St Albans
We had the pleasure of reimagining this substantial family home in St Albans, blending traditional period character at the front with a confident, contemporary feel at the back. This dual brief guided a full renovation, one that honoured the building’s heritage while opening it up for modern family life, repurposing rooms and rethinking circulation so that every space earned its place.
At the front, we celebrated the traditional. In the formal sitting room, where the cornice had rotted, we took a mould of the original profile to recreate a matching section, replaced the heavy curtains with plantation shutters, and laid a modern herringbone floor across the front of the house and through the hall. Across the way, a deep green panelled study now serves as library, music room and quiet retreat in one, its restored cast iron and marble fireplace anchoring bespoke cabinetry with warmly lit display niches.
At the rear, the house opens into a bright, connected kitchen, dining and living space beneath a run of roof lights. Rather than replace the traditional kitchen, we lifted it with new lighting and warm neutral cabinetry. Bespoke walnut joinery, a full height bookcase wall and an oversized rug in garden greens, pinks and yellows tie the interior to the garden beyond.
The most telling change was a purposeless room that had become a dumping ground. By adding a door and rethinking its use, we created the green room, a multipurpose study wrapped in sage cabinetry with a warm walnut display, now one of the most characterful spaces in the house.
